Harold Kurtz and his older brother Phil were five years apart their whole lives, of course. When Phil suffered a stroke in 2004, the gap seemed to widen. After writing fictionalized accounts of their childhood home of Brandon, WI, from the 1940's, in Hardly A Silent Night, Ring the Bell and Count the People, and The Missing Library Books, Harold found out that Phil reacted positively to the parts of the stories that were actual events. Harold then set out to write down those and many other memories, recapping their family and shared experiences from youth.
